How to keep old ChatGPT projects after the macOS app update

I recently updated the ChatGPT desktop app on my Mac and had a small moment of panic. When I opened the new version, all my projects and chats were gone. My recent conversations were still available, but my projects had disappeared completely. I could still see them on the web version.

After a bit of digging, I discovered that the previous version of the app had been moved to my Bin and renamed “ChatGPT (Classic)”.

I moved the .dmg back from the bin to my Applications folder, and it still works perfectly.

I can run both the new ChatGPT app and “ChatGPT (Classic)” side by side. This allows me to keep access to my existing projects. And I can also explore the new experience for future use.

The new version looks impressive, but if you update and think you’ve lost your projects, it may be worth checking your Bin ;)

Restoring ChatGPT (Classic) was the solution for me. This worked on my Mac at the time of writing.

That’s all, everything is fine. Happy days!
